Conficker Worm Reaches Go Time, To No Effect

User Awareness is high, which should help minimize problems, experts say

SAN FRANCISCO - The malicious Conficker Internet worm got more aggressive about trying to reach its creators Wednesday, but computer security researchers appeared correct in their predictions that the effects would be muted.

The worm's programming included a change in tactics on April 1: The estimated 3 million to 12 million computers infected by Conficker were told to step up their attempts to "phone home" for commands. But that seemed to be the only sign of life from the bug.  read more »

Has the Mac lost its cachet?

In tough economic times, some wonder if Apple computers will take a hit

Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer recently proclaimed "the tide has really turned back" against Apple computers. The straitened economy would seem to be a strong argument for PCs, which overall cost less than Macs for essentially the same hardware. But is the Mac — the darling of artists, designers and the generally stylish — really starting to lose its appeal? Will self-expression through brand affinity yield to raw economics?  read more »

What Will Conficker Bring on April 1?

Conficker has become the boogeyman of the security industry over the last year. The latest variant of the worm, Conficker.C, is programmed to do something on April 1. But what exactly will happen? The scary thing is, no one can say for sure.

The "A" and especially "B" variants of this worm (also known as Downadup) have built a botnet estimated at several million PCs, almost exclusively through exploitation of the MS08-067 vulnerability in Windows. Conficker added some innovative techniques to update itself though a large number of domains, the names of which were algorithmically generated by the program. Because the names were deterministic, it was possible for the DNS authorities (VeriSign, et al) to block the names. With few exceptions, the worm has been unable to spread since that point several weeks ago.  read more »

Voodoo’s Envy 133 really is more beautiful than the MacBook Air

Calgary (CA) – Voodoo, the boutique end of HP, has been designing crazy computers for a while, and HP’s almost unlimited resources have now allowed it to make an even crazier laptop. We first wrote about the ultra-portable Envy 133 back on June 10th and now take a closer look at Voodoo’s MacBook Air-killer.

With Envy 133, it seems that the engineers wanted to swing for the fences because the notebook is completely built out of carbon fiber, and the way how engineers got multi-touch touchpad to work is just madness. As you can see in the gallery, both the speakers and touchpad are set inside of drilled carbon fiber.  read more »
