A Gift to Sayulita
Sayulita attracts talented personalities, and Michael Abramson is no exception. Michael came here for a visit just over a year ago, and like so many visitors, he was so moved by the experience, the people, and the beauty of Sayulita that he decided to add acupuncture to the many attractions of Sayulita. He closed his thriving practice in San Diego and was in Sayulita within two months.
Acupuncture, an Oriental healing practice, has been used successfully to relieve acute and chronic medical problems for over 5000 years. Michael’s professional passion is to assist people in seeing a balanced approach to healing. His vision in Sayulita is to integrate cross-cultural healing practices, philosophies and perspectives, perhaps one day to
locate holistic healers under one roof in a wellness center or wellness clinic.
Michael started out as a graduate from University of Delaware with a BS in sports medicine. His practice in sports medicine quickly transformed into conceptualizing and managing employee health incentive training programs for a large telecommunications firm in Washington, D.C. The prevention program was successful in increasing work productivity and decreasing sick days.
Michael was so impressed with the health maintenance training results that when he relocated to San Diego, after working independently as an exercise physiologist and personal trainer for a short time, he was accepted into the masters program at Pacific
College of Oriental Medicine in San Diego. It is one of the few accredited colleges of oriental medicine in the United States and is highly regarded in California, which has exceptionally high standards.
Michael completed his masters program and is one year short of his doctoral degree. He is a licensed acupuncturist (LaC) and a licensed massage therapist (LMT). His masters training included an internship in China where he worked half a day in the traditional
acupuncture hospital and spent the other half in lectures. The hospital has departments and areas of treatment. Under supervision Michael treated patients using acupuncture needles and herbs and was tutored directly in these ancient arts of healing.
When asked about benefits of treatment, Michael gave an example of diabetes, Type II, in patients being brought under control with the use of the acupuncture needles and/or pressure followed by healing herbs. He said acupuncture is used in all areas of medicine,
including oncology, women’s health, children’s maladies, and diseases of aging, such as Parkinson’s disease. You can relieve symptoms of common colds and flu’s, anxiety, stiffness, and pain in general.
Do the needles hurt? They look like they do, but, no. Does it work? People walk out of his treatments turning necks that hadn’t turned in a five years and looking for back pains that are no longer there.
Michael is a gifted healer. He combines his solid background in Western Medicine that concentrates on the body’s muscles, ligaments, and bones with the principles o f Eastern Medicine, which relies on tapping into the meridians of the body where the energy flows. But he takes it further. He educates and creates a means for people he treats in the community to see anther perspective, which involves the principles of balance, and to find the common threads of healing among cultures, including herbs as healers.
In his work about 60 percent are ex-pat locals, with numbers increasing from the local Mexican community. The other 40 percent who see him are tourists. He hopes somehow his vision is realized since Sayulita attracts holistic healers and practitioners. He would
like to see the wellness center offering services with a network of care givers, such as yoga practitioners, masseuses, naturopaths, osteopaths, and local healers.
Michael even ventured to say that Sayulita has the potential for becoming known for its holistic services given the energy here. And who is better to posit such an observation than a specialist in the energy flow of acupuncture than Michael.
