Open Letter to Sarah Palin
Dear Mrs. Palin:
I woke up this morning thinking about your decision to run for Vice President of the United States. Now, I know I am only one person, but I once heard that for every thought we have, there are hundreds of people before us who have thought the very same thing. Maybe that’s why I write you today. Maybe, just maybe, the thoughts I had this morning represent some of the things other people have also been feeling the past few weeks.
It is sad to see that a nation comprised of millions of people has such a small number of choices when it comes to electing someone to represent the majority of the population. When I see someone like you expressing your thoughts and feelings, someone like you attempting to represent the majority of the population, I find myself feeling an overwhelming sense of sadness and of lost hope. I can’t help but dream and visualize someone other than you, someone with a higher level of consciousness and awareness, someone wise and caring, someone who doesn’t think and act from his or her ego, or self-serving needs, but from his or her higher self, someone who dreams of representing the whole population and not just a fraction of it. I can’t help but have a deep feeling of fear when I think of someone like you representing an entire country. I can’t help but feel that all that you preach for could create exactly the opposite results. Someone with your narrow thoughts and vision, like many in the present government, can and will create more terrorism, more international conflicts and wars, more threats, more unsafe situations for any American citizen around the world. In fact, I see no difference between you and the Islamic fundamentalists or any other religious or political fanatics for that matter.
Have you ever thought about the future? Have you ever thought about what we are creating for future generations? You say you want to drill for oil. Instead, why don’t you drill inside your brain to see if there are any hidden, wiser thoughts or any silent, buried motivations to create other, less destructive energy sources that don’t negatively affect the environment and life on the planet? You want to teach creationism at schools. Why? So you can brain wash the children of the US? You promote ignorance and childish religious beliefs, or perhaps it is more correct to say you intend to impose ignorance and childish religious beliefs, for that is what you are doing, is it not? I wonder if you feel the way some Islamic fundamentalists do, believing that anyone who is not a Christian like yourself should be executed or denied the right to think for himself or herself. Is it correct to assume that if you could you would eliminate our freedom to choose what to think and what to explore unless our thinking and exploration of the world and its people coincided with your own beliefs? Are you so self-centered that you would dare to rob the rest of our nation the right to enjoy a broader perspective of humankind, of the world, of the Universe?
I wonder if your God approves of all of the wars, all the killings, all the misery and cruelty, all the intrusion and invasion of other parts of the planet by people who think like yourself.
When you say “God Bless America”, do you think it is a good thing to say? Does it represent the extent of your compassion? What kind of God, a supposed superior being with universal vision and love, would select only a specific area of the planet to bless? I suppose if you agree with the thinking that human beings are made in God’s image, it actually makes perfect sense that a narrow-minded person like you would represent a narrow-minded God; the same God you pretend to believe is blessing the US and the US alone. Its mind boggling to me to think that someone who believes in God would not ask Him to bless every person on the plant, the whole world, the entire universe for that matter!
Do you know that the word religion comes from the Latin: Religare? Do you know Religare translates to mean ‘to join together, to tie, to unite’? What have humans done with religion? Used it to do nothing but separate one person from another. Each religious banner selfishly professes the discovery of some kind of ‘salvation’ for only their believers using more often than not, fanatical thinking and actions to justify their idea that ‘their’ religion is the only one that will ‘save’ them, bring them closer to God. And why? As an extension of the Father we lost some time during our childhood? Do we need to keep looking up for that Father to protect us, to guide us, to punish us when we don’t ‘behave’?
What is the concept of being a ‘Christian’? What is it that all the ‘Christians’ voting for Bush in his first and second election were thinking about? I don’t see any Christian concepts in the present government’s actions or words! I can’t recall anything happening in the present administration the past few years that reminds me even remotely of ANY of Jesus’ teachings! Where is the love, the forgiveness and the compassion, the opening of arms toward any and all of our brothers and sisters around the world? Have you seen it, because I certainly haven’t. Instead, we live in a country where false evidence is used to resurrect deep unconscious fears, fears that are then meticulously groomed in order for killing and destroying to become suddenly justified, ‘right’, even God’s will. This so called ‘Christian’ administration is sending a message to the rest of the world, a message that oil, money and power matters more than anything else, even Jesus’ wise and humble teachings.
Now is the time for people, for all of us, to open our eyes, to widen our perspectives, to extend our arms and to embrace the World and the Universe beyond any kind of borders or flags, religions or political differences, races or creeds. It is not a time to retreat into ourselves, into our small-minded, limited perspectives that do nothing but divide, exclude, reject, kill.
We are all on board the same Ship traveling through life on this vast Ocean that we all share! Imagine yourself on a real ship, with people divided into different areas, separated by different religions, races, ages, sexual orientations, etc. Imagine each group afraid of visiting different areas of the ship, afraid of being killed or hurt by others just because of a different skin color or a different belief. Imagine living like that for an entire life! In fear! And all because of ignorant, childish beliefs that separate instead of unite.
What would you think if some day a brainless self centered and self serving ignorant decides to start a war and sends missiles and other bombs to the “enemy” located on the opposite side of the ship because of some other unconscious brain washed friends of his say there are weapons of mass destruction there? Such stupid action would eventually sink the whole ship and then What? We all die!
Now instead, imagine if one day the people on that ship finally realized that in order to survive the journey they had to start communicating with the ‘other’, with ‘different’ people on other areas of the ship. Imagine a people once sequestered to their limited borders finally feeling free and safe while visiting all the areas of the ship. Food and resources once scarce become varied and plentiful. Ideas and techniques once stagnant become suddenly fresh and alive with new perspectives. Different cultures, different experiences, different ways of life begin to benefit, enrich, expand and enliven life for everyone. Where once there were thought to be only enemies, new friends are discovered, souls uniting with other souls, each more alike than different, all aching to live in peace beneath the fading masks of their ‘differences’. We all live on the same ship! Think about it!
“Imagine all the people, living life in peace…
Imagine all the people sharing all the world…
You may say that I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one.
I hope some day you’ll join us!
And the world will live as one.”
Thank you, John Lennon!
