Oaxaca Towns End Violent 20-year Battle Over Land

Two indigenous Zapotec communities in the southern state of Oaxaca have signed a treaty ending a 20-year land dispute that claimed more than 200 lives, local media reported Wednesday.

Inhabitants of Santiago Amoltepec and Textitlán in Oaxaca's Sierra Sur mountains had been fighting over a parcel of 200 hectares located between the two communities. But a process of dialogue and conciliation, fueled by a promise of economic aid from the state Agrarian Reform Secretariat, persuaded the towns to divide the contested land.

"It's a historic day for Oaxaca, one we all were yearning for," said Gov. Ulises Ruiz, who witnessed the signing, according to La Jornada.
