I chose Regis as my first interview because he was one of the first surfers I met in Sayulita. He was a cocky little dude back then and I've watched him grow up in the time that I've been here.
Q: Does your family support your surfing?
A: Actually, they stay pretty neutral.
Q: What are your goals?
A: To keep surfing as long as I can and eventually start a family.
Q: What are your surfing goals?
A: To be able to make a living from surfing.
Q: What's your favorite surf spot?
A: Sayulita, Blacks Beach in San Diego.
Q: What was your first surfboard?
A: An ultralight 6-0 tri-fin given to me by my friend Ian Pancer
Q: Who has helped or encouraged you most with your surfing?
A: My friend Ian Pancer and George from Plus1 surfboards.
Both of these guys kept me motivated and helped me with
sponsorships and equipment.
Q: Who is your favorite pro surfer and why?
A: Taylor Knox,He's very fluid and powerful.
Q: Where have you travelled for surf?
A: The U.S., Canada, Costa Rica, Cuba.
Q: Which did you like best?
A: Canada. It's cold as hell but it's beautiful like a postcard.
Q: What do you think surfing's impact on Sayulita has been?
A: It's changed the economy here, there is a lot more money
in town. There are lots of new businesses, real estate has
gotten very expensive. It has become very well known as
a good surfing spot.
Q: What do you think of all of the tourists surfing here?
A: I think it's cool, but they need to leave the attitude behind.
Q: What do you think of longboarders?
A: They're cool as long as they stay out of my way.
Q: What do you say about tourists that claim they have been
mistreated in the line-up?
A: You get treated the way you treat others.
Q: How do you see Sayulita 10 years from now?
A: More people, more crowds. Probably less Mexicans and
more foreigners. Soon only the wealthy will be able to afford
to live in Sayulita.
Q: What would you say to the Sayulita youngsters?
A: Stay focused. Stay away from drugs, don't even try to
experiment.
Q: Who do you think is the next hot surfer from Sayulita?
A: Adan Hernandez.
Q: What kind of girls do you prefer, Mexicanas or foreigners?
A: Brunettes.
Q: What is your girlfriend status?
A: I'm single, but I've been in a relationship for the past year
and three months. I have a three year old daughter named
Ximena.
Q: Do you think she'll surf when she grows up?
A: Yes. I want her to be the first female pro surfer from
Sayulita.
Q: Will you let her date surfers?
A: She can pick who she wants.
Q: What do you do to keep in shape?
A: Surf, fish, eat healthy.
Q: Looks like you've been drinking some beers?
A: Shut up pelon.
